Itinerary

Upon your arrival at Paro International Airport, our representative will warmly welcome you and escort you to your hotel in Thimphu, the vibrant capital city of Bhutan. Your journey begins with a picturesque drive along the winding road that follows the beautiful Paro River.

Our first stop is the historic Simtokha Dzong, the oldest dzong in Bhutan, believed to guard the region against evil spirits. Its name translates to ‘Atop a Demon’. This historical site also houses the Rigney School for Dzongkha and monastic studies, attended by both monks and laypeople.

Once we reach Thimphu, we’ll visit Tashichho Dzong, also known as ‘The Fortress of the Dharma Raja.’ It has traditionally been the seat of the Druk Desi, the head of Bhutan’s civil government.

Note: Tashichho Dzong is open during weekdays after office hours (5pm onwards) and from 9am to 5pm on weekends

Today, we’ll embark on a scenic drive to Punakha. Along the way, we’ll stop at Dochula Pass, where you’ll be treated to stunning 360-degree views of the Himalayan Mountain range, especially beautiful on clear winter days.

Our first stop in Punakha is Chimi Lhakhang, a charming monastery perched on a hilltop and adorned with hundreds of prayer flags. Built in 1499, it’s dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kinley, also known as ‘the Divine Madman’. His unique and quirky legacy includes advocating the use of phallus symbols as paintings and carvings to ward off evil spirits.

Next, we’ll visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, also known as ‘the palace of great happiness or bliss’. This impressive fortress, built in 1673, was the administrative center of Bhutan until the capital moved to Thimphu in 1955. Its grandeur and historical significance make it must-see.

After exploring Punakha, we’ll drive back to Thimphu and return to the hotel.

Start your day with a breakfast at the hotel, then set off to explore Thimphu’s cultural treasures.

First, visit the Folk Heritage Museum, housed in a charming 19th-century building. Here, you’ll find an array of traditional tools, materials, and artifacts that offer a fascinating glimpse into rural Bhutanese life.

Next, head to the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, established in the 1988, where you’ll learn about Bhutan’s unique approach to healthcare, blending traditional remedies with modern medicine.
A must-see landmark is the Memorial Chorten, also known as the Thimphu Chorten. This impressive Tibetan-style Buddhist monastery is adorned with golden spires and bells and is a beloved symbol of Thimphu.
Then, visit the National Library of Bhutan, a beautiful four-story building that resembles the central tower of a Bhutanese dzong, housing a vast collection of ancient texts and manuscripts.

After your morning in Thimphu, we’ll drive to Paro. Upon arrival, explore the National Museum of Bhutan, situated in a unique circular building that once served as a watchtower.

Finally, visit Paro Dzong, also known as Ringpung Dzong, meaning ‘Fortress on a Heap of Jewels’. This stunning example of Bhutanese architecture is one of the country’s most iconic landmarks.

End your day with a relaxing evening at your hotel in Paro.

Today, get ready for an unforgettable adventure as we hike to the legendary Taktsang Monastery, also known as the ‘Tiger’s Nest’. Perched on the side of a steep cliff at an altitude of 3,000 meters, this stunning monastery is the most famous landmark in Bhutan and offers breathtaking views.
After our hike, we’ll visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most important Buddhist temples. Located near Paro Airport, this 7th-century temple is a serene and spiritual place, rich in history and cultural significance.
Enjoy the serene beauty and spiritual ambiance of these iconic sites before returning to your hotel for the night.

Today, you will be transferred to the airport for your onward journey.
