Bhutan Visa Information

To visit Bhutan, all travellers, with the exception of Indian, Bangladeshi and Maldivian citizens, are required to obtain a visa.  As part of the visa application process, individuals are also required to pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) as stipulated in the “High Value, Low Impact Tourism” Visa Policy of Bhutan.

Travelling to Bhutan requires the services of a guide, vehicle, and driver. Thus, it is required to engage the services of a licensed tour operator when planning your visit.

Tourist Visa Fees:

The visa is valid for 90 days from the date of issue, and permits a maximum stay of 30 days.

Visa Fee: US $40

SDF Fee:

US $100 per person/per night

US $50 for children/per night (aged  6 to 12 years.)

TDF Fee:

US$ 10/ per person

F‍ast Track Service:

US$ 10/ per person

Note: Visa fees, SDF, TDF and Fast Track Service are subject to change.

Tourist Visa Requirements:

To complete the visa application, the following criteria must be met:

  • Purchase of tour package from a licensed operator.
  • Provide a digital copy of the passport with a minimum validity of 6 months from the date of departure.
  • Submit a recent passport size photo. The passport sized photo cannot be a cropped version taken from the passport itself and should be taken separately.
  • Arrival and departure dates.

The visa is issued approximately 30 days prior the scheduled arrival in Bhutan.

Note: The Department of Tourism, Bhutan has decided to lift the mandatory requirement of travel insurance for all future visits. Effective immediately from April 23 2024, guests will no longer be required to provide proof of travel Insurance for visa processing.


Passport Copy Guidelines for Bhutan Visa Applications

To ensure smooth visa processing, please make sure the submitted passport copies meet the following criteria:

  • High-resolution scans with no thumbs or fingers visible
  • The signature page is not required
  • All four corners of the passport should be clearly visible
  • All information must be clearly legible, including headings and content, with no light reflections
  • Passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the guest’s final travel date

Please note: Failure to meet these criteria may result in visa applications being rejected by the Tourism Council of Bhutan.
